Chandan Jatra

Temple ritual festival

Apr 17 - May 07 , 05:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Jagannath Temple & Narendra Pokhari (Narendra Tank), Puri

Chandan Jatra is the longest festivals associated with Lord Jagannath, celebrated in Puri with rituals, processions, and water-based ceremonies- the Jatra goes on for 21 days – 42 days outside the temple, when representative of Lord Jagannath , Shri Madan Mohan along with Bhudebi and Sridebi and their friends are taken out in ceremonial palanquins with procession to Narendra Pokhari(Pond). The festival involves the ceremonial boating of deities in decorated boats, accompanied by music and traditional performances, offering a unique visual spectacle.
Cultural Significance
  • Reflects the Jagannath tradition as a living guide to everyday life, where rituals like the application of sandalwood paste, ceremonial bathing, and leisure boating symbolically demonstrate ways to cope with the summer heat.
  • Marks the beginning of the annual ritual calendar of the Jagannath Temple, setting in motion a sequence of important festivals leading up to Ratha Jatra.
  • Celebrates the intimate and accessible aspect of divinity, as deities are brought out for public viewing and participate in leisurely, almost human-like activities.
  • The Chapa Khela (ceremonial boating) represents a rare ritual where devotion blends with recreation, highlighting the unique performative traditions of Puri.
  • Reinforces the syncretic and inclusive nature of the Jagannath cult, where rituals are designed to be experienced collectively by the community.
