Gopabandhu Das Memorial Museum

Celebrating the life of a visionary leader who shaped Modern Odisha

About

Located in Suando village, Puri district, the Gopabandhu Das Memorial Museum commemorates the life and work of Pandit Gopabandhu Das, known as the Utkalmani (Jewel of Odisha). This renovated memorial is set on a sprawling seven-acre campus and includes his ancestral house, transformed into a museum that showcases artifacts, books, and rare photographs depicting his journey as a freedom fighter, social reformer, and literary icon. Public amenities like a Shiva temple, a playground, a pond, a canteen, and a shopping complex have been built on the banks of the Bhargavi River.

Born on 9th October 1877, in Suando Village near Sakhigopal of Puri District, he started his education career in Vernacular language initially at Rupadeipur Minor school and then at Puri Zilla School. Gopabandhu had lost his mother Swarnamayee Devi after few months of his birth and lost his father Daitari Dash while he was a student at Ravenshaw College. Inspite of his great personal loss, he had written poems like "Abakasha Chinta", Go-mahatmay, Nachiketa upakhyana, Karakabita, Dharmapada and "Bandira Atmakatha" when he was continuing at Ravenshaw College. He emphasised on four major problems, viz, (a) amalgamation of all the Odia speaking tracts (b) permanent measures for the prevention of floods and famines in Orissa (c) the restoration of Odia’s right to manufacture salt free from excise duty and (d) spread of education on Satyabadi model. Gopabandhu regularly attended and participated in the annual meeting of the Utkal Sammilani. He was elected as its President in 1919. He gave a broader definition of ‘Odia’ - any well-wisher of Odisha is an Odia. Gopabandhu was the first leader of Odisha to organise the Odisha Provincial Committee. He championed the cause of Odia literature. Gopabandhu was a great social reformer and harbinger of a new social order. His crusade against untouchability, advocacy of widow remarriage, campaign for literacy, new model of education, stress on both rights and duties, emphasis on women education, particularly vocational training and above all a deep commitment and compassion for poor and destitutes have immortalised him in Odisha and India.
