The Belgadia Palace

Elegant, Restrained & Refined

About the Palace

The 18th century Palace is one of the rare specimens of Victorian Architecture in the state. Nestled amongst the scenic landscape, the beautiful palace now a boutique homestay, replete with wooden staircase, full-length arch windows, dark teak wood furniture, and chandeliers dangling from wooden ceilings –captivates the visitors with its understated elegance.

Brief History

The Bhanja’s have a rich legacy which has left an indelible imprint in the cultural canvas of Odisha. Maharaja Harihara Bhanja shifted his capital from Khiching and built his citadel at Haripur somewhere around 1322 AD. This proved to be a masterstroke as the impregnable fortress, the difficult terrain and a well-oiled army made it impossible for any invader to breach the citadel, enabling the Bhanja’s to rule unperturbed and ushering in a period where art and craft flourished which the region is synonymous with even today.

Haripur finds a mention in Akbarnama for providing shelter to the Sultan of Bengal Daud Khan from Akbar’s army. Even when the Mughals spread in Odisha, Mayurbhanj under King Vaidyanath Bhanja was able to successfully repel them.

Moving through the maze of history to the present, the Belgadia Palace is a tribute of love between two individuals who came from diverse backgrounds but were united by a common thread – to work for the upliftment of the society and of course LOVE. Maharaja Ram Chandra Bhanjdeo an important pillar of modern Odisha built this beautiful palace for his wife Sucharu Devi – who was a noted women’s right activist and social reformer of her times.

The current generation of the royal family wants to build a sustainable community by encouraging and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Mayurbhanj using tourism as a vehicle. One of the sections of the palace renovated the rooms to suit the modern tastes and opened its doors to visitors. Each room has a story to tell and a colour scheme to match it offering an insight into the life and times of the royal family.

The rolling hills and the sparkling waterfalls that nestles this palace coupled with a well-heeled history and the vibrant canvas of art and craft of Mayurbhanj makes Belgadia an alluring destination.
