Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves
Set atop twin hills in Bhubaneswar, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves offer a compelling window into Odisha’s ancient past while serving as a vital link between its ancient and medieval history. Dating back to the 2nd century BCE during the reign of King Kharavela, these rock-cut caves were carved as retreats for Jain monks, reflecting a life of discipline, meditation and spiritual pursuit. Udayagiri, the more elaborate of the two, is famed for the intricately sculpted Rani Gumpha, where scenes of royal life and mythology unfold in stone, while Khandagiri retains a quieter, contemplative charm. Inscriptions like the Hathigumpha edict add historical depth, and the hilltop setting opens out to sweeping views of the city bringing together history, artistry and spirituality in an experience that feels both timeless and deeply evocative.
