Where Birds Rule the Sky
Discover the Heritage

Mangalajodi

Mangalajodi is basically the backwaters of Chilika Lake and is one of India’s most remarkable examples of community led conservation program transforming a fragile ecosystem into a thriving birding paradise. Once known for rampant bird poaching this wetland today stands as a global model where former hunters have become dedicated protectors of avian life. Every winter, thousands of migratory birds travelling vast distances along the Central Asian, East Asian and Australasian flyways descend upon its tranquil marshes creating a spectacular congregation of wings, calls and movement. What sets Mangalajodi apart is its intimate eye level birding experience best explored through traditional country boats that glide silently through narrow channels and open wetlands. The landscape constantly shifts from mist laden dawns to vibrant daylight activity offering rare glimpses of raptors in action, flocks taking flight and delicate feeding behaviours in shallow waters. More than just a destination, Mangalajodi is a story of coexistence, resilience and the enduring bond between communities and nature.
