Maa Kalijai Temple
"Rising from a small island in Chilika Lake, the Kalijai Temple is one of the lagoon’s most revered shrines deeply woven into its waters, beliefs and journeys. Accessible only by boat, the temple offers not just a spiritual halt but a scenic experience across the vast expanse of Chilika.
Folklore
The temple’s origins lie in a poignant legend. A young bride, Jai, was crossing the lagoon with her family when a sudden storm capsized their boat. As the waters turned violent, she prayed to Goddess Kali to save her loved ones. While others survived, Jai was lost to the lake. Over time, her story immortalised in the poem Kalijai by Godabarish Mishra became part of local folklore, and the shrine came to be known as Kalijai, blending devotion with memory.
History
Historically, the temple was established by the Kings of Parikud, ardent devotees of Goddess Kali. Legend recalls a moment when the King of Khordha prepared to invade Parikud. On the day of the attack, as his army reached Chilika’s shores, vast flocks of flamingos covered the waters, appearing like a formidable defending force. Mistaking them for an army and fearing defeat, the King of Khordha retreated. The King of Parikud attributed this to divine intervention, strengthening the temple’s spiritual significance.
Today, Kalijai remains a vital place of faith for fishermen and boatmen who seek blessings before venturing into the lagoon. During Makar Sankranti, the island comes alive with the vibrant Kalijai Makar Mela, drawing thousands of devotees where faith, folklore and the rhythms of Chilika come together."
