Dhabaleswar Temple
Set on a tranquil island in the Mahanadi River, Dhabaleswar Temple is one of Odisha's most revered shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name 'Dhabaleswar', derived from Dhabala (white) and Eeswar (God), is rooted in a popular legend in which Lord Shiva is believed to have transformed a black calf into white to protect a repentant thief, symbolising redemption through faith and forgiveness. Believed to have originated during the Somavanshi period under King Jajati Keshari and later renovated by the rulers of Athgarh, the temple combines spiritual significance with historical heritage. Surrounded by serene riverine landscapes and accessed via a picturesque suspension bridge or boat ride, Dhabaleswar offers visitors a unique blend of mythology, history and natural beauty, making it one of the state's most cherished pilgrimage destinations.
