Sukuapada

A legacy of infusing life into stone

Stone craft is Odisha’s most popular art export in terms of revenue. The age old craft is kept alive by descendants of artisans whose work are embellished in the Temple Architecture of Odisha for posterity. The outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark are full of work shops where the artists ply their trade.

The stone craft village of Sukuapada is located right on the road to Lalitgiri Monastery. The quaint village of some 30-40 craftsmen carry on with their work of infusing life into the stones just like their ancestors. The villagers are forthcoming to tourists and share information about their work. Though there are no records of stating the lineage of this village, the villagers maintain that their ancestors have been residing in the village since ancient times when Jajpur was the nerve centre of cultural activities of Odisha.

Besides large and small figurines of the God’s associated with the Hindu mythology, idols particularly of Ganesha, Buddha, Elephants are usually in demand so are the utilitarian pieces in stone such as vases, bowls, mortar and pestle, ashtrays and decorative figurines and designer furniture for drawing rooms.
