Rourkela, is a planned city of Odisha to its North. The name Rour-kela originates from the local language of Sadri which means "Your Village" (Rour = Your & kela comes from the word "Kila" which means Village).
The mineral rich zone of Rourkela intersected by the rivers Brahmani, Koel and Sankha from two sides was aptly chosen for setting up a steel plant to make India an industrialized state in Soviet model of social development. Therefore, it is also called the Ispat Nagar and/or the Steel city of Odisha. Rourkela Steel Plant is one of the largest steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The city developed around the steel plant and the ancillary business and is a quite a prosperous city, although not leaving completely shedding off its quaintness.
Primarily having a tropical climate, Rourkela experiences extreme weather conditions in the summer and winter months and a sizable amount of rainfall as well.
Being a hilly terrain, the city is dotted with luscious forests, waterfalls and creeks which makes it a great destination for being in the wilderness. The city has been selected as smart city in the third phase of smart city list on 20 September 2016.
As a whole Rourkela is perfect confluence of a city living and a nature retreat.
